Whitestown opens an inclusive playground | Local News

The City of Whitestown has opened new playground equipment at Gateway Park.

“With the addition of this equipment, Gateway Park will be Whitestown’s most inclusive playground,” Whitestown Parks Manager Savannah Solgere said in a press release. “Children of all abilities will be able to access these amenities.”

New facilities include a grass pitch, slide, net structure, shade, zipline and swings. Gateway Park is at 6150 Gateway E. Dr., directly west of the Neighborhoods at Anson community.

Solgere said the Whitestown Parks Master Plan called for a playground in the area. The city posted a message on Facebook asking what residents wanted to see.

“Inclusiveness was a really big response,” Solgere said. “We listened to what community members wanted and really knew that when we created our design.”

Parts of the playpen are shaded, to allow areas on the grass and around the play pieces not to be in direct sunlight so that children with sensory issues can still play, even in hot weather. Solgere said.

The project is funded by a grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which provides matching grants to states and local governments for the acquisition and development of public outdoor recreation areas and facilities.

The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2022. Future plans for the park include adding restrooms and more park amenities.
