Shots on the playing field during combat kill 1, wound 3; no arrests

READING, Pa. (AP) — Gunfire at a playground during a brawl between teenagers in the eastern Pennsylvania town of Reading left one youngster dead and three others injured, officials said. authorities.
Reading Police said 15 to 30 youths, some from out of town and all between the ages of 16 and 18, had gathered at the Brookline Park playground “to fight”. They said shots from several individuals in the park then rang out.
Chief Richard Tornielli said officers responding to Monday’s shooting at 7:45 p.m. found a man dead. Three others were taken to Reading Hospital with gunshot wounds; all were reported in good condition and are expected to survive.
Tornielli said at least one house was hit by gunfire. No arrests were immediately announced.
Mayor Eddie Moran promised to reach out to the school district and faith-based and nonprofit organizations to try to stem the violence. He also promised to speak to council members to try to have at least $1 million allocated for youth programs and after-school services.
