Schuylkill County’s first all-inclusive playground project to open this Saturday in Minersville
In January 2020, a group of volunteers officially formed a 501c3 non-profit organization called Dustin’s Adventureland to build the playground adjacent to the Minersville Lions Club clubhouse.
The group wanted to build a playground where any child, including those with special needs, could play and participate.
After more than 2 years of dedicated fundraising and hard work, the group was able to raise nearly $400,000 through donations, in-kind contributions and grants.
In today’s economy, the group has had to contend with price increases, with the overall cost of the project increasing by an additional $50,000 since initial estimates.
In addition to these increases, the group was recently informed that the path to the park was not sufficient and would need to be improved before the facility was built and opened.
“We worked diligently with Borough officials, Minersville Engineer Don Cuff, Dustin’s Adventureland Engineer Bill Parulis of WJP Engineering and the Minersville Lions Club to find a solution to improve the entrance.” said Vice President Jeffrey Dunkel.
After several months of discussions and ideas, the first phase was presented to all groups and agreed to move forward with this project to begin construction.
At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Borough of Minersville approved to cover paving and labor costs for the new trail and Dustin will cover excavation and fencing costs along the trail.
WJP also donated its services for the Phase 1 track project.
“The help and support of Minersville Boro, Womer Landscaping, Minersville Lions, Tropp Paving, Don Cuff of Entech and Bill Parulis of WJP Engineering is greatly appreciated.” said Dunkel.
Following Wednesday evening’s approval by Council, all parties involved have agreed to commence work this Saturday, March 12, 2022 at noon at the Lions Clubhouse on Church Street.
The public is invited to join in the fun.
“We’d like to invite everyone to our official groundbreaking event on the playground near the Minersville Lions Club pavilion. We’ll be having drinks and pizza and costumed characters for the kids!! Bring them along and take photos, enjoy food and drink and witness the initial search!!!!” said Dunkel.
