Petition to improve Chalkwell playground

A LEIGH councilor has started an online petition to replace ‘outdated’ play equipment in Chalkwell Park.

Councilor Vinice Cowell said the area was in ‘urgent need of updating and replacement’ after spending months advocating for a broken swing set to be reinstalled in one of the space’s two playgrounds London Road green.

She said: “Chalkwell Park is a focal point for families in our area. Its easily accessible location, proximity to public restrooms, ease of pedestrian access and combination of functions make it a highly valued and versatile space.

In the petition, Councilor Cowell describes the various issues she has had with the equipment: “In 2019, the over eight year park saw the loss of its traveling swing set due to maintenance issues.

“The scale was not replaced and no other equipment sought to fill the gap.

“The zip line also breaks often leaving it out of use for periods of time and the next swings are also often removed for maintenance.

“This park is often flooded due to waterlogging around equipment, resulting in closures for safety reasons.”

The petition calls for “full community consultation” of two playgrounds in the park.

He adds: “Both parks have a minimum supply of play equipment for children with reduced mobility or disabilities.

“Southend is now a town and is focused on its upgrading programme. Our parks deserve to be a priority in this vision.

At the time of writing, over 80 people have signed the petition, which can be viewed at:
