A fire broke out at the Zurich Zoo on Friday afternoon: The “Strohballenberg” playground in the Leva Savannah caught fire and completely burned down. There were no injured animals or zoo visitors. The cause of the fire is not yet clear.
Safety and Rescue Zurich reported on Friday evening that the emergency call was received at 3:30 p.m. As the name suggests, this play building at Leva’s facility was made entirely of straw and therefore burned down in a very short time.
Due to the message, extinguishing work continued until the evening. There were various small ember nests in the straw. The emergency services therefore had to break bales of straw and spread the straw.
Individual embers had to be located using a thermal camera attached to the drone. Then the firefighters extinguished them separately so that there was no more fire. How the fire started is a matter of investigation.
