Eagle Scout Inclusive Playground Opens in Texarkana

TEXARKANA, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) — A new playground dedicated to providing fun for children of all ages and abilities is now open in Texarkana.

Local Boy Scouts of America Troop 16 has partnered with the city of Texarkana, Texas to build the all-inclusive playground at Spring Lake Park.

On Thursday, Troop 16 and the city held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new park that lasted about a year.

The play area will provide a safe space specifically designed for children with disabilities and special needs.

“It was something that our community badly needed so kids with disabilities could get out and enjoy this park,” Texarkana Mayor Bob Bruggeman said.

Scout leader Joel Orr says the scouts raised about $150,000 to fund the project. He and his scouts helped build some areas of the playground.

“It gives them a place to come and relax and have fun in a family environment and has been for about 30 days. Every time I come here it’s packed with people, everybody having fun,” Orr said.

Several sponsors and donors have also made the project a reality.
