Boulder Junction playground opens Saturday

Boulder Junction’s playground doesn’t look like much these days.

Most of the equipment has been dismantled.

All that’s left standing is the swing frame and the climbing rock.

Laura Bertch is Supervisor of the Boulder Junction Town Board of Directors and Chairman of the Park Board of Directors for the Breakthrough Event. She says the playground has been under construction for more than two years.

The plans were approved last winter and they have been fundraising ever since.

“Everyone has been very generous so far. We hope this momentum continues through April next year. Everything counts, even the change we pick up around town at various locations. So whatever anyone would like to donate would be greatly appreciated,” Bertch said.

The city raised over $232,000. He still has about $68,000 left.

But while he scrambles to raise the rest of the funds, he forges ahead with his plan.

The equipment has been ordered and should arrive early next year.

If they can raise funds, Bertch says installation could begin as early as May.

To show off the progress they’ve made so far and build on the momentum, as Bertch says, the city is hosting a grand opening this Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the BJ Sports and Rec Area.

“It’s going to be fun. We’re going to have shovels and helmets. We’re going to take pictures. There’s not much to see as the equipment has been removed. It’s been graded and installed for installation. It’s more ceremonial in nature,” Bertch said.

The plan for the new playground includes four sections.

There will be different sections for different age groups as well as an inclusive zone with equipment accessible to everyone.
