Arson attack at the Big Swing Adventure playground in Eccleshill

POLICE are investigating after a playground was broken into and an arson attack broke out.

The Big Swing Adventure Playground, in Eccleshill, was forced to halt sessions due to damage – but the team there have spoken of the “incredible” support they have received.

They shared the news in a Facebook post and said: “Sorry to start your week in the most positive way, but there will be no play sessions this week as there has been some anti-social behavior outside opening hours during the weekend.

An arson attack was started in the playground

“As you can see some people broke into the playground and started a fire on the football pitch at the top of the site.

“Not only was it really dangerous (because the tires were used), but we will now have to use a lot of time, energy and resources to clean it up in time for our summer season (our busiest time of the year ).

“We are in contact with the police and have CCTV on the playing field and we will contact anyone we see in the footage. If you have any information that could help us, please contact us.”

Play Bradford manager Janet Jewitt told the Telegraph & Argus: ‘We are truly devastated by this recent arson attack at the Big Swing Adventure Playground as it has meant we have had to stop sessions this week and use a time and valuable resources to clean up the mess.

“We completely discourage after-hours activities, as it is not safe for people to be on site without being supervised by our team.

“In saying that, it’s been amazing to see so much support from our local community and it really shows how united this locality can be in tough times.

“We are very grateful to the members of our Play Bradford team, who are working very hard to ensure the site is suitable so that we can resume our playing activities in time for our busiest time of year – the summer holidays.”

The cruel attack comes just days after Councilor Brendan Stubbs (Lib Dem, Eccleshill) raised serious concerns about the problems in areas BD2 and BD10.

Speaking after the incident at the playground, he said: “The police are collecting information on these people and eventually they will get the evidence they need to bring these people to justice.

“There is no excuse for this kind of behavior.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “We are investigating an arson attack at the Eccleshill gambling site in Harrogate Road on July 3.

“Inquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police via the report they offer to www.westyorkshire.police.uk/contactus or via 101 quoting crime reference 13220361152.”
